Groby Street Fair 2014 – the Kelly Kettle Challenge

9 July 2014

Members of the public at the Groby Street Fair were challenged by the leaders of Groby Scout Group to take the Kelly Kettle Challenge. The challenge consisted of 3 parts which if successful the participant got some boiling water with which they could make a cup of tea.

  1. The first part of the challenge was to use a sharp knife to whittle a piece of wood to get some wood shavings to use as fuel for the kettle.
  2. The next part of the challenge was light the fire without using any matches or a lighter. The spark needed to start the fire was generated using a firesteel. By striking the two pieces of the firesteel together, sparks could be produced which could light cotton wool initially and then the wood shavings created in the first part of the challenge.
  3. Finally the shavings were put in the base of the kettle to heat the water.
